Addiction Rehab

Rehabilitate means to return to a previous condition or an improvement of even that. An addiction rehab that is truly effective will bypass restoring the individual to a previous condition and go straight for an improvement of even that. The reasoning is relatively simple. The previous condition obviously contributed to and led up to the drug abuse and addiction to begin with. If one is trying to insure a drug free productive condition that will last a lifetime than one better locate, address, and fully resolve those past factors that contributed to and let up to the addiction initially and then kept it going.

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing condition, characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and drug use which is accompanied by functional and molecular changes in the brain. In addition to being addicted to methamphetamine, chronic methamphetamine abusers exhibit symptoms that can include violent behavior, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. They also can display a number of psychotic features, including paranoia, auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances, and delusions. The paranoia can result in homicidal as well as suicidal thoughts. With chronic use, tolerance for methamphetamine can develop. Users may take higher doses of the drug, take it more frequently, or change their method of drug intake. In some cases, abusers forego food and sleep while injecting as much as a gram of the drug every 2 to 3 hours over several days until the user runs out of the drug or is too disorganized to continue. Chronic abuse can lead to psychotic behavior, characterized by intense paranoia, visual and auditory hallucinations, and out-of-control rages that can be coupled with extremely violent behavior.

Rehab centers play a key role in addiction recovery for many, many addicts and alcoholics. For many individuals a rehab center offers a break from their normal environments where use and addiction has become the norm for them. The amount of care, compassion, understanding, and persistence needed to affect a true and lasting recovery is often only available in a residential rehab center. To create true healing one must first get away from the source of injury, pain, upset and apathy and the rehab center offers the drug free environment in which to do so.

Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant that directly affects the brain. Cocaine has been labeled the drug of the 1980s and '90s, because of its extensive popularity and use during this period. However, cocaine is not a new drug. In fact, it is one of the oldest known drugs. The pure chemical, cocaine hydrochloride, has been an abused substance for more than 100 years, and coca leaves, the source of cocaine, have been ingested for thousands of years. There are basically two chemical forms of cocaine: the hydrochloride salt and the "freebase." The hydrochloride salt, or powdered form of cocaine, dissolves in water and, when abused, can be taken intravenously (by vein) or intranasal (in the nose). Freebase refers to a compound that has not been neutralized by an acid to make the hydrochloride salt. The freebase form of cocaine is smokable.

If you are considering a community rehab option it is important that you evaluate your own or your loved ones level of abuse or addiction. Abuse can sometimes be successfully handled in a community rehab center where the individual is considered at an out-patient and returns home each day. This has limited workability when it comes to full blown addiction. Addiction generally involves a drug or alcohol abuse pattern that is out of control and despite one’s best intentions he or she finds themselves unable to control or stop the drug abuse. At this stage the addict usually lacks the self control to return home each day and stay clean between community rehab visits. In such a case a long term residential treatment facility can markedly increase the odds of success and addiction recovery for lifetime.
